Visiting Croatia made me wish I had taken the time to properly learn the history of the Balkans. Croatia joined the European Union in 2013 and adopted the Euro as recently as 2023—and talking to local residents there made clear that the conversation about the benefits and tradeoffs of integrating into Western institutions is very much still alive.
