Germany is one of those places that I keep ending up back in, even when it's never the anchor of my trip. It certainly helps that it's easy to the train into Germany from many parts of Europe, and perhaps it's just a coincidence that I frequently end up connecting in Frankfurt or Munich. And that means I've had the opportunity to see several German cities, each one for a short few days.
Germany is a place where history still weighs heavily—from the legacy of the Holocaust and World War II, to witnessing how the country is reconciling economic disparities between former East and West Germany.
In between museums and memorials, though, there's plenty to appreciate. Munich felt like one of the most livable cities I've visited. U-Bahn and S-Bahn systems across German cities are easy to use. And Berlin has quickly become an diverse, international city while preserving the texture of its complex history.
